Last year, over 12,000 people made a difference in the lives of others volunteering their time and talent with the Capital Area Food Bank. Our volunteers save the food bank over $725,000 every year in staffing costs, which we are then able to channel back into feeding the community.
There is a place for everyone at the food bank, including: individuals, families, corporate groups, religious groups, school groups (children must be 12 or older), civic groups, and others.

“Everybody can be great because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve…you don’t have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love. And you can be that servant.” Martin Luther King, Jr.

Individual Opportunities
Ambassador Volunteers
Ambassador Volunteers are individual, long-term volunteers that provide their skills and expertise to the CAFB and its programs. Based on your interests and skills, we will match you with a department within the food bank to work on specific projects.
One-Time Volunteers
We offer one-time volunteer opportunities in both our office and the warehouse. In the warehouse, volunteers will help to pack and sort donated food. In the office, volunteers may help with mailings, preparing for special events, and other administrative duties.
One-Time Volunteer Hours (by appointment only):
Tuesday through Saturday: 9am – 12pm or 1pm – 4pm
To sign up to be a one-time volunteer, contact volunteer@capitalareafoodbank.org or 202-526-5344.
Special Events Volunteers
The CAFB is always in need of volunteers who are willing to represent the food bank and our mission at special events. These events range from galas to tabling at CFC/United Way fairs.
If you are interested in signing up to help at our special events, email volunteer@capitalareafoodbank.org.
Group Opportunities
Warehouse Volunteers
Group opportunities are available in both our DC and VA warehouses. Group opportunities will vary based on the size of your group and will most likely involve some sorting and packaging of donated food.
